October 6th Release Notes

Posted by archiveDNA on Tuesday Oct 7, 2008.
10.7.08

There are many new things in this build… I will cover them in the release notes, but we will also be doing some screen shot features this week to explain a little bit of the thinking behind some of the new systems and where we are headed. But for now, here is the brain dump of last night’s work.

Profile Enhancements/Changes

  • A new Explore tab has been added to your member home section. It lists out popular games being played and enjoyed by people in the last 24 hours, as well as games that people like you based on Bartle Score are playing, what your  friends have been playing, and what people in your groups are playing over the last two weeks. This is just the beginning. We wanted to get this tab up there, but look for a much deeper system for matching you to games in the future.
  • A new Games tab has been added to your member home for managing all of the games you like, dislike or are anticipating. If you play games on any supported network, a queue of games to add to your profile will appear.
  • A new Share tab has been added to your member home for controlling publishing of game activities to social networks, as well as accessing all of your signature images you can share on other sites.
  • Adding a game has been simplified. All we request is do you Like/Dislike the game, or are you anticipating its release. It requires you to make a judgment call, but ultimately games in your profile should reflect your tastes in games. We will be deploying another system in the future tied specifically to game activity.
  • The dev blog now appears on your member home page.
  • The game list in your public profile will only show games that you have marked Anticipating or Liked. Anticipating games are shown first… liked games after that.
  • When marking a game, LIKE, DISLIKE or ANTICIPATING, history entries will be generated for your activity and broadcast over your social networks.
  • Paging added in to all places where experiences are listed to prevent loading large numbers of pages on a single request.
  • Removed some text from the profile page to clean up the titles on the gadgets.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing the experience importer to duplicate the entries it was pulling in.
  • Due to changes in how we capture games added, we removed unneeded info from the DNA Panel game list.
  • Fixed a layout issue that was appearing when trying to upload an image with IE7.
  • Corrected an issue that caused the user quote on the profile page to bleed out of the top box.

Group Hosting Enhancements/Changes

  • Any gaming experience you add to your profile and attach to a guild will now show up in your guild site under a "Stories" tab. It allows you to see all of the fun stories your guild mates are telling in their profiles.
  • Fixed a bug that was preventing people from activating recruiting for their guild. The issue was something was causing duplicate or blank game records for guilds… making it so there was no game ID to activate against. We corrected the data and it now works. If you previously had an issue with recruiting, give it a try and let us know if it works!

General Enhancements/Changes

  • Made edits to the homepage to reflect our new social media capabilities, as well as a repositioning of the dev blog and a new Group creation form.
  • The login box was removed from the homepage. Users should use the unified login form that is available in the top nav.
  • Made some changes to how the header is cached… helping performance on PHP pages.
  • Put in some performance improvements for quiz logging.
  • A TinyURL system was put in to assist with auto-generated content for distribution over social networks.
  • Caching was implemented on the game lists to aid with response times.
  • Fixed an issue that was allowing users to register the same openID with multiple accounts.
  • Fixed a bug that was preventing the creation of custom questions for guild applications.
  • Changed all of the forum boxes to be white with black text… this will help with styles and link colors in vBulletin that don’t work with black backgrounds.
  • Fixed a performance issue when selecting game names for display.
  • Consolidated some code from multiple files into a single file to save requests and help performance.
  • Added unique page titles to the member home sub pages to help people who are bookmarking.
  • Corrected an issue where the nav bar would wrap at lower resolutions.

Coming down the line

  • Guild/Group/Clan signature generator
  • Guild/Group/Clan Roster enhancements
  • A game trait system to let you express WHY you like the games you do.
  • Public profile enhancements

…so that is all for now! We are just cranking away over here! Thank you all for your patience during the builds and our continual attack on bugs and performance. As stated we will be doing a few features on the new member home sections.
