Minecraft Update: New Mob *May Contain Spoilers*

Notch announce a new mob on his Minecraft blog today but I will warn you now it may be more fun to experience this mob first hand before you read about it, so before you continue on think about it for a moment.

In this post Notch explains how he wants the emotion of fear to be experienced by the player,

–"Fear is one of the easiest emotions to evoke, but doing so in a way that doesn’t frustrate or fatigue the player is more difficult. I find this fascinating. What parts of fear are fun, and what parts aren’t fun?"–

Notch wanted to be sure that this mob was something different than all the other ones he had created. This mob, "The Enderman" is a tall and lanky, dark figure who has some odd behavior. Endermen will go about their business, picking up blocks and moving them somewhere else. The thing that makes this mob really misleading is that until you look right at it he will remain passive. But when you do look at it, the Enderman will freeze and stare at you, but once you turn your back to it he will charge at you at very fast speeds.

–" I wanted something a bit more psychological. So to really drive home the point of looking at them being bad, I made the Endermen freeze and turn towards you when you look at them. As long as you look straight at them, they stand perfectly still and look straight at you. As soon as you look away, they will run (very fast) towards you."

It's great to get these updates from Notch as he develops and I can't wait to see what Mojang creates next.
