WoW? What’s WoW?

Friday, July 11th, 2008 | Market Trends

On Tuesday, I showed you the top “also played” games for WoW players. On Thursday, I contrasted that with the top games for Guild Wars players. Today, I want to show you the list of favorite games for people who have never even TRIED World of Warcraft.

Here’s the thing about MMOs – they take insane amounts of time. I don’t say this like it’s a bad thing. Most people give up watching TV to make time for MMOs, and as far as I’m concerned, any activity that is active versus passive is a superior experience. Gaming is active, at least as far as your brain is concerned.

And despite the fantastic numbers that WoW has racked up, and everyone likes to say how mainstream WoW is, the real truth is that people who have never touched WoW and never will make up a far larger group. Let’s see what they play:

Well… they play the free games that come with Microsoft Office. No, really, five of the top ten games actually played by GamerDNA members who have never touched a drop of WoW are free with every modern PC. Solitaire and Minesweeper appear in every top ten list, but among non-WoW players, there is apparently more time and energy for a fast, free, “can I beat my high score/extend my winning streak” play session.

Not counting the freebies, though, what are we looking at?

Battlefield 2 – 21%
Counter-Strike – 20.5%
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Multiplayer – 19.5%
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Single Player – 17%
Team Fortress 2 – 14%
America’s Army: Special Forces – 14%

The first surprise for me was that Counterstrike did not “win,” as it did among MMO players of WoW and GW. It was close, but Battlefield 2 edged out Counterstrike. Call of Duty 4, both multiplayer and single player, appeared next as you can see, but by a single percentage point. Team Fortress 2 and America’s Army were tied for the next place on the list.

Based on this week’s number crunching, I’ve got two questions – where is the breakout shooter MMO? There’s a huge population of people playing games with missions, multiplayer action, high powered gaming rigs. Second, where is the high-gloss, non-recruiting-oriented military MMO, where you don’t so much “level up” as earn medals and get promoted by the game and/or peers with whom you serve? The magic bullet that can take these games to the next level is the feeling of belonging, of being part of a greater whole… without the elves.

  • There was one at one point, Planetside. Under SoE management, it never took off though. Not very surprising. In a post-WoW world it will probably be easier for an FPS MMO to take off though, every gamer knows what WoW is.

Before WoW the MMO genre wasn't exactly well known. I know here in Sweden people had barely even heard of games like SWG, UO and DAoC, only the most "Hardcore" gamers had tried them. And now, I think every single person in Sweden with the exception of hobos and long term prisoners have heard of the game, it's on the news, in the papers and it has been in pretty much every gamers home at some point.
  • One would expect that Wolfenstein Enemy Territory would fit in your question. As a free to play online game, which offers some leveling without being recruited I'd think it fits the bill.

Is it in the gameslist on gamerdna?
  • Hardcore FPS players will generally not accept an MMORPG because the current technology in MMO's is about 5 years behind what is in FPS games.

It was VERY hard for me to play an MMORPG with turn based controls after years of playing the latest FPS games. Now that I am back in FPS's due to lack of originality in MMO's, I find it very hard to want to invest my time into a game with semi ok graphics, no real physics or atmosphere, no ragdoll effects, no havok, etc when I can get an all around multimedia entertainment experience and immersion with games like GTA IV or pure enjoyment with things such as Lego Star Wars, Indiana Jones.

MMO's can start attracting more FPS players when they do what makes FPS games.

Playing MMO's is like driving an old car that has to be cranked up to start, no shocks, no heat or a/c and no radio, but it's nostalgic and hip for middleaged people to have a classic car when the majority of people under 40 just want the keys to a porsche.

The thing about the FPS crowd that DIDN'T surprise me was the fact they all want the 'intense game play you only get in the FPS games'. 'Run, Jump, Shoot.' yeah.... intense, not quite what I'd call it though.

FPS games like the action, thats really it. You can take away the story, fancy terrain and gimmick's... just make their model look 'cool' and have a fancy looking gun, and you don't need tactics or strategy to win the day.

I can only imagine that the gamers who obsess over FPS games are the type of people who are easily distracted by shiny things and the colour red (and yes, I do know how that makes me sound).

But then, what other type of games do FPS players play?
  • Are these PC-only numbers, since you've split out COD4 betwixt multi and single? Did any console game make the lists for those who haven't played wow, or have too few people linked their XBL tag?

@Hagan - wow, way to generalize about FPS games. :P
  • Sam
Heh, Hagan. Way to generalize about FPS gamers. I don't think you understand FPS gamers very well at all :P
  • Imran
Hagan, while I can agree that there a lot of FPS gamers that share the very attitude that you have, you're making a pretty big generalization about FPS gamers. In fact, I would equate your comment to the "cheetos-eating, slob sitting at his desk in his parents' basement calculating armor combos" generalization that people seem to have about MMO gamers.

    That's just me though
  • I think the Realistic-Military-FPS numbers are short because there are just so very many of them. If there was just one good one, that would probably be in there, but there are quite a few.

This is just a wild guess on my part, based on the amount of shelf space realistic war sims get in Best Buy. :)
