Ok this has been a big issue for me and I have a lot written and even more unsaid on the subject. Basically my take on it is that gamers are gamers. Make a good game and we will play it. It is only recently that the manufacturers decided they need to market to female gamers. My take on that is just make decent games and those that like them will play them and tell our friends, but if you make a substandard product or something that is geared too much for one group or another, we will ignore it. We are Gamers, regardless of our plumbing.

Although I’m pretty much a casual gamer (and female, haha), it’s true that most people don’t expect females to enjoy gaming. I got crowded once for playing Warcraft III in an internet cafe just because people were amazed I was playing it with such enjoyment.

But frankly I stay in the shadows because I prefer playing as male.

As a female ‘hardcore’ gamer, I frequently get frustrated and annoyed by the lack of belief in our existence. Women get ribbed a great deal by male gamers declaring that we’re men masquerading as women. And then there are the games with only male avatars… shameless. I’m hopeful that these numbers will give both devs and doubters alike a kickstart to reality.

I liked this article – and the above comments. I think the gender binary is flawed and never truly existed in the first place. If we just look at nature, we find that most of our differences in gender are created by ourselves – manners, style of dress, public opinion of sexual activity, etc… We are actually all born female and either develop into, or don’t, male bodies. It doesn’t take much to consider that it’s pretty darn possible for anything to happen – and it’s great that your data confirms that!

i agree with elindor i play alot of mgo and with the new expansion gene pack (aka get a female char) men are now pretending to be female with basically means we dont no who is male and who is female just really these charts mean nothing unless u did a survay with a 1000 women and a 1000men then we can decide

That reminds me about one thing – are people always honest about their gender? I do know female gamers who declare themselves to be male (& put false data), and male gamers who do the exact opposite (O.O dun ask me why). One female friend told me she pretended to be a guy online to avoid being underestimated. One guy just likes girl sprites, and in *ahem* true roleplaying style, “roleplays” just like a girl (he’s pretty convincing too!)
