September 30th Release Notes

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008 | News

Hi all of you out there in GamerDNA land! This week was a little strange for the build. We normally do the builds on Monday, but because of some complexity we held off until Tuesday afternoon. After that, we were going to open up a few new features but decided to polish them up a bit more this week before turning them on… so most of what went in is behind the scenes. Stay tuned for next week!

Here are the notes:

Profile Enhancements/Changes

  • Member home and the profile page have been altered to support a fixed width layout to prevent browser issues with Safari and Chrome.
  • API Keys have been created for all users. You can find it by opening the DNA Panel and looking in the lower right.
  • We changed how the DNA panel initially loads to increase performance on other pages.
  • Warhammer badges now display on the badges page if you have created one.
  • Added support for html tags B, I, EM, and STRONG for the experiences form.
  • Cleaned up the character page to provide an edit link as well as a link to the badge for the character if one is available.
  • If your WoW characters were not updating, they should be working now. There was a change to the armory URL that was doing some double encoding. It should work with apostrophes and special characters correctly now.
  • The count of quizzes taken shown in the DNA panel have been corrected to reflect the actual number.
  • There was some strange logic preventing the showing of characters if attitudes weren’t answered. We removed that logic so that characters show if they exist.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing the Xbox Live gamercard to display even if the user had not entered an AKA for it.
  • Map buttons removed from the friends list on the profile page.

General Site Enhancements/Changes

  • Made performance improvements to the way we load avatar images.
  • Implemented caching for the footer that reduced traffic and increase performance.
  • Resolved an issue where cookies were not being cleared properly causing a logout look. This was due to the change from a www.gamerdna.com cookie to a gamerdna.com cookie to support sub domains. If you still get the issue, it is best to clear your gamerdna.com cookies in your browser.
  • Corrected an issue where the password field was showing the password.
  • Added the friendly URL for the warhammer API
  • Repaired some paging issues in the company blog.
  • Due to the new routing of the profile pages, we had to change how the favicon was rendered.
  • Fixed the link to a static page that explains OpenID support.
  • Fixed some typos in the homepage
  • Fixed a typo in the FPS quiz.
  • Updated the vBulletin templates in a few places that were still showing GuildCafe as the site name.
  • Changed the wording of quizzes on the guild directory to be more general.

Guild Hosting Enhancements/Changes

  • We changed around where the guild editor is included on the pages so that it prevents conflicts with other scripts in an attempt to cure some lingering display issues for some users. I think it worked!
  • If you try and create a rank for a guild that already exists, you will be prevented from doing so and receive an error message explaining the situation.
  • The "preview directory" link in the guild management screens now point to the correct location.

Coming in the next week:

  • Integration with social media services.
  • Auto-importing games from networks into your profile.
  • A roll-up of guild stories on guild sites.
  • Changes and new features to your member home page.

… and that is just for starters! October is shaping up to be a fun month with all sorts of progress.

I also hope everyone notices the site running faster with less errors. If you are seeing errors, let us know!

  • Good job adding/enhancing/fixing all that stuff.
Looking forward to the things yet to come. :)
  • Fragment
This is just kind of a random question, but I was just wondering why the release notes are published like 2-3 days after they actually occur?
  • Well what happens is, we do the build... and then we go through and validate that everything is as it should be... I don't want to publish release notes for it if it isn't actually in there... sometimes after validating it on the live server, we may not like something... and we may disable it... rare... but it happens.

So depending on the complexity of things, it can take awhile to make all the decisions about what is actually in the notes. So I normally type them up, circulate them internally... and then I type up the public ones and put them on the blog.

Back when the builds were a little less-ambitious it was possible to do the build, validate, and do the public and private notes all in one day... but we are getting pretty crazy over here, so as it gets more complicated, it takes more work to do all those things. Ultimately it is my job to validate, and type up all the notes, so it also depends on if surprises come up that pull me away from those tasks as well... which happens. :)
