It’s alive! GamerDNA.com is back up!

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009 | Behind the Scenes, News

Welcome back to gamerDNA.com!

We first want to thank everyone for their patience over the last few days that the site has been down, we really appreciate it! This was a big update for us, so we needed the time to make sure everything worked, fix various bugs that came up, etc.

That all said, you can check out the brand new gamerDNA.com right now!  There is a TON of stuff in this update, with the most obvious being the new color scheme and design, new Member Homepages, and new Profiles.  There are many new features within these pages, other changes and updates that are big and small…so expect a flow of blog posts explaining it all in the coming days and weeks.

In the mean time, we encourage you to check out the new gamerDNA.com and let us know what you think!  Use our Feedback page to let us know about any bugs, your thoughts, your praise, etc – We want to hear from you!

Thanks!

    Yay! :)
  • I'll probably get used to the interesting new layout pretty quick, but the color scheme could use a lot less... well, white. I really preferred the old black look. Easier to see, and much less intense in the dark (as a gamer's room should be). If you could make an option to do your page up black or dark, that'd be really cool.

thank god its not depressing emo black!! :-) it lookks so clean... the flow is much more detailed as well...
  • I like it!
  • Krovikan
Its to white, it hurts the eyes give me my black back =(
  • Thanks for the kind comments guys!

    Ummmm quick question

did you forget the edit functions???
  • itemforty
The new layout is... not my favorite. A felt the old layout worked better for focusing on games. Now I have a lot of unfilled "descriptions" around a lot of white white white. It feels so... empty :(

EDIT: I don't know how to edit the descriptions or ratings. I might just be stupid. I appreciate the work, though. Obviously a lot has changed.
  • Retodon8
To add descriptions and solve your problem, open your games list:
At the top right, open the "Manage" menu and click "Your games: View all".
(That, or use this URL: http://www.gamerdna.com/dna/games/ )

Choose the game you want to add stuff to, and click the amount of stars you want to rate it.
To the left of that add "Game traits" with the "Edit" link there.
On the right in the "Games actions" column click "Edit" to add a description/review.

Thank you. I thought there was a way to do this directly from the main page. I might have made that up (or, again, I'm stupid). Sorry about that.
  • We will be enhancing in the coming weeks the entire game edit process. We do recognize that it is a bit crazy right now. So we will get it cleaned up and make it much easier to complete your games.
  • Actually preferred the old layout.
The old page design was much nicer and compact, also this bright theme isnt really what i had expected.

Any change that there will be a choice option to use the new or old layout on your page? would be very much appreciated.

Truly disappointed. :/ I didn't mind the site being down for a few days, but you made me believe I would like it even more when it came back. Now, instead of a crisp, polished-looking page that flowed very well with itself, we have a horrifically bright expanse of white that looks like someone PrintScreen'd the old site, super-sized all the dialog boxes needlessly, and pasted it all over a blank sheet of paper. I love gamerDNA, but looking at this new incarnation makes me nauseous.
  • As long as you're all still actively fixing and improving, I'd like to make another suggestion. When I go to another person's page, it tells me how many things I have in common with that person. This by itself really doesn't tell me anything interesting or helpful at all. If you could make so, say, if I click on that, it tells me just what it is we have in common, then that would be useful. I'm not even sure what it's going by for items in common with just a number. Does it go by games or traits or genres or... what?
  • Hi, yes this is on the short list. We had this in, but we ran out of time getting the design complete by the launch day... literally... we pulled it in the last few hours because we wanted to get it out the door... so shortly the number will be clickable and show you all the things you have in common.

It's too bright for my taste. I think one of the things that attracted me here in the first place was the black and green & coolness. that's gone *cries* Some things seem improved on the technical side but on the aesthetics, thumbs down.
  • I am loving the sleekness of the new and refurbed gamerDNA. now all my friends can get my game info whether they like it or not. LoL
  • Conansr
The whole page design is off the hook, I really like how you manage everything now. Keep up the great work!!
  • I'd kind of completely forgot this was happening, so I was surprised to see the new look when I logged in haha. Anyway, it looks really nice ;)
  • looks nice, but we likes the darkness... :/
  • ah, just noticed the genre and platform breakdown in my game collection. I do love pie charts. :D
  • It seems that everyone likes pie charts :)
  • waynomac
I much prefer the old layout. It was much better organized and easy for me to find the different features. And, yes, waaaaaaaaaay too much white space. Sorry, I disaprove of the changes.
  • ladyyohka
Well personally I don't like it. When I am at home it takes a few mins to load up the pages. Before the update the pages would load right a way. Also I agree about the white. WAY too much white. Dark colors are the best or you should make an option where we can change the background to what we want and the color of the whiteness *squints eyes* lol. I like the tabs on there. Pretty good. But I would like to see no white. Gamers already stare at a screen with colors flashing and such and that can strain the eyes at times and white just doesn't help. Thank you ^^

FACEPALM I feel like an idiot it was staring me right in the face

The site wasn't greatly user friendly to begin with (this was the general vibe expressed by several friends of mine). I hate to say it, but I feel these changes have made it worse.
  • This is quite simply the best computer game I have ever had the pleasure to play.
  • zinya
I know it doesn't really matter what I say, but I figure I might as well throw in my 2 cents.

The whole white/grey theme makes the pages look unfinished. Swapping out the white or the gray I think would be a huge plus.. monochromatic theme = ewww!

I like the media button on my personal page. Being able to look at all the pictures I've put in is MUCH better compared to having to scroll through that crappy little film strip.

I like the pies on the game area... you guys should bring back the personality pies that were up for guildcafe... it was fun to compare yours with other people in your guild/clan. Oh.. and the friend web.. that thing rocked.

OMG! Thank you for finally making that annoying calendar tiny! I have always despised it being the first thing that shows up on my page!!!!

The gamer bio tab blows. Why are my friends in my gamer bio tab? Make a friends tab with all the stuff dealing with those I like to stalk. And where the heck did my personal chat box go?! I had over 3 years of discussions on beer and torte saved in there!!!

The forums appear to still be banished to who knows where.

All in all, I guess it's looking pretty (if you're into monochromatic themes), but I don't see any enhanced ways to "connect" with people or to learn about others. I guess that's the main thing I've noticed about GDNA over the years... it seems to actually be getting MORE difficult to connect with people instead of easier.

    cheers

I am Not liking it. too much going on on one page and not flexible enough.
  • good, just got used to the old one, but still ace! Keep it up!
