GamerDNA Member Spotlight

GamerDNA Townhall

Last month we put the call out for questions about gamerDNA, and the community responded in a big way! We answered these questions in a new set of videos that we’re calling GamerDNA Townhalls. These are videos where we answer your questions, talk about the new stuff that we’re working on, and basically give you another form of access to the gamerDNA dev team.

-Where in the real world do you live?
I live in Buckeye City: Columbus, Ohio.

-How long have you been gaming?
Been gaming since preschool. The school I attended had an Atari for us to play after naps. Shortly thereafter I begged my parents for an NES and the rest is history…

-What got you into gaming and what sort of games do you like the most?
If I had to narrow it down to a single game that really put its hooks into me and made me a gamer for life it would be Secret of Mana for the SNES. Great story, gameplay, addictive leveling, fantastic soundtrack AND
Co-Op. I still play it. As for favorite genre of game I’d have to go with FPS, RPG, RTS, and platformers/adventure games. FPS because I thrive on competition, adrenaline, and overcoming the odds. The others because when I’m not shooting people (virtual/online of course) I love good a good story, exploring, strategizing, leveling and looting.

-What brought you to gamerDNA and what do you think is the best feature of the site?
I actually found my way to GDNA through following QforQ on Twitter after he was mentioned by someone I already followed. I consider the best actual site feature to be the games collection and games’ pages. I can’t wait to see some of the additions talked about in the Town Hall vid. But overall I’d say GDNA’s best feature is its great community.

-Who from the gamerDNA community would you like to meet in person?
It’d be great to spend a day o’ gaming with MykalGaiden, DVader83, Crystalia, Soyle Sama, JinTetra and Mishy. Though I fear the bill for all those airplane tickets would not be pretty.

-What is your favorite game?
Call of Duty 4 and Halo 2 from the FPS side, and Suikoden 2, Final Fantasy VIII, and Mass Effect from the RPG side.

-What gaming systems do you own and which is your favorite?
Sega Genesis, Playstation 2, PC, and my favorite: Xbox 360.

-Believe it or not, the Christmas release season for games is starting in just over a month or so. What games are look forward to this fall? Why?
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for somewhat obvious reasons(1200 hours logged playing CoD4 and 5?…). Also Gearbox’s Borderlands, which looks like it’s going to play the way I was hoping Fallout 3 was going to play.

Hello GamerDNA Nation!

It’s been a busy month here at GamerDNA, with lots of work going on behind the scenes…and as a result, we now have plenty of stuff to talk about!

Last week was E3, the annual Video Game Industry trade show for all the game publishers/developers to show off their cool stuff to the press and retailers (like Best Buy and Wal-Mart). The show has become a huge press spectacle over the years, and this year was no exception. Exclusive game announcements and trailers, even The Beatles made an appearance at this year’s E3.

TweetMyGaming Launches!

Last week we announced the launch of TweetMyGaming, a site that tracks all of the gaming conversations on Twitter in real-time, and surfaces the most popular games that are being talked about right now.

On the website you can watch all the game related tweets from Twitter stream in to the site in real-time, see what the top games are on Twitter, or take a look at a particular game’s page on TweetMyGaming and see what people are saying about that game.

Last week I had the pleasure of doing interviews with MTV Multiplayer and Current TV throughout the week about TweetMyGaming, as the site is a great way to see how people are reacting to game announcements and press, in real-time. You can check out my segments with MTV Multiplayer below:

We created the site as a mash-up between the Twitter API, and the newly launched GamerDNA API, called Helix. The GamerDNA Helix API is in beta right now, and we’ll be adding more and more to it as time goes by. Right now, even in it’s beta state, it is quite powerful and gives you access to a large amount of data and features from GamerDNA. This past month we introduced the NOW page, a real-time feed of all of the activity on GamerDNA. You can use this page to see what is happening on the site, find new stuff and other gamers to check out, or even see what games are getting all of the attention within the community.

Facebook Connect

We’ve now added Facebook support, alongside our Twitter, FriendFeed, and Tumblr integration! Check out this How-To guide on how to hook up your accounts to GamerDNA!

Players Widget:

This tracking widget allows you to pick up to 20 friends and get updates about what they are playing right now, or have played recently. It gives you a quick one-shot look at what everyone has done recently, right from an easy to find spot on your Member Homepage.

-Where in the real world do you live?
Louisville, CO, USA

-How long have you been gaming?
Since I was three and my father brought home an Atari 2600. 28 years later I’m still going strong. I’d appreciate it if that number wasn’t spread around…

-What got you into gaming and what sort of games do you like the most?
My dad got me into gaming. I’ll play dang near anything. I do have a soft spot for JRPGs, Legend of Zelda, Metroid. Basically anything with a decent story. A good narrative can turn a mediocre game into a playable game.

-What brought you to gamerDNA and what do you think is the best feature of the site?
I first read about gamerDNA on Kotaku, I believe. I tried it out, and found a great community that was filled with people passionate about the same thing I was. Currently the feature I use the most is the NOW page. It makes it very easy to find new and interesting conversations, and it has exposed me to a greater cross-section of the gDNA membership.

-Who from the gamerDNA community would you like to meet in person?
It’s quite a list, but here goes: Mishy, QforQ, colliny2K, arislyn, Svoboda, Retodon8, Dvader83, Shiiro. I’d say Jezmyn as well, but I see her every night.

-What is your favorite game?
Kind of a loaded question. There are so many fantastic games I’ve played over the years, and it’s hard to narrow it down to just one. I guess I could say Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. I dig that out at least once a year and replay the entire thing.

-What gaming systems do you own and which is your favorite?
PS2, PS3, N64, DS, PSP, Xbox 360, Wii, Gamecube, GBA, iPhone, PSone, OSX, SNES. Again, it’s hard to pick a favorite, but I definitely play my DS and my 360 the more than the others.

-The E3 Expo was just the other week, what games are you most excited about that were announced/shown off? What are you excited about for 2009 in gaming?
Another long list, I’m afraid. Final Fantasy XIII, Kingdom Hearts (DS), Metroid: Other M, Uncharted 2, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Mass Effect 2, God of War 3, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Dissidia: Final Fantasy, Shadow Complex.

I look forward to the expansion of digital distribution, more independent games and the expansion of current franchises. I’m not that impressed yet with the likes of Project: Natal and Sony’s Eye Toy retread.

Another month has gone by, which means it’s time for another gamerDNA Newsletter! This time around we’ll be switching up the name to "gamerDNA Community Newsletter"..as we think Community is a lot better than "Member". After all, this is a newsletter for the community, right?

Feature Spotlight

Over the past few weeks, gamerDNA has experienced quite the facelift. Not only have we added a number of new features, we’ve also totally revamped the site navigation. We created some articles on our blog which should help explain the new site navigation, as well as the great ways to start conversations and share your gaming with your friends.

Alphadoque wrote a very in depth article explaining the process that we went through and the choices that we made when we worked on the new site navigation. Not only is this a great read, it also gives a sneak peek at our new NOW page!

QforQ’s article on "How to Start a Conversation on GamerDNA" details out the various ways to share all your gaming activities with your friends. Who knew there were so many great ways to share cool stuff with other gamers and see what they’re up to?

Member Spotlight

This month’s member spotlight is a well rounded gamer, with interests in handheld gaming to PC, Xbox 360, and Wii games as well. We’re happy to congratulate Kvitne on being in this month’s Member Spotlight!

We were able to get a couple minutes of Kvitne’s time and ask him a few questions about his gaming lifestyle and his predictions for this year’s E3 Expo.

-Where in the real world do you live?

I live in Elon, North Carolina. It’s a small town about 20 minutes from Greensboro and an hour from Raleigh.

-How long have you been gaming?

I’ve been gaming for a while. I still remember going over to my friends houses to play Toejam and Earl and the Sonic games on his Genesis. Before that are many fond memories of Mario. Good times indeed.

-What got you into gaming and what sort of games do you like the most?

Sonic the Hedgehog was definitely what first got me into gaming. I’ve been a big fan of his games for a long while. After that it was Pokemon. My parents always thought video games were evil so the first ever game system I owned was a silver Gameboy Pocket that I bought for $10 from a friend along with a broken Pokemon Blue game cartridge that couldn’t save. I still played the heck out of that thing anyway

In terms of games that I like the most, well I always enjoy a good FPS game. I can’t get enough of the Call of Duty franchise or Bioshock. I also like RPGs, Action RPGs, and puzzle games like Professor Layton. Mostly what I look for in a game is a good solid storyline that will keep me interested and some solid gameplay that isn’t too frustrating to get the hang of.

-What brought you to gamerDNA and what do you think is the best feature of the site?

I saw a post about the site a while back on gaming blog Kotaku, the social aspect of the site and the ability to post your gaming activities is definitely my favorite part. I like being able to keep track of what my online friends are playing. It also helps set up game parties with people that I know online exclusively.

-Who from the gamerDNA community would you like to meet in person?

There are a bunch of people that I know from a forum called Sonic Online who I’ve since convinced to join. Meeting them in person would be pretty cool. I’d also like to meet Blamefulgecko, QforQ, and Alphadoque. Who knows? I might like to meet whoever’s reading this. I’m an easy going guy, so add me as a friend!

-What is your favorite game?

That’s a really tough one, there are so many great games out there! I guess I’ll break it down by system. For my 360 I love playing Bioshock. That’s a game where I always know that I’ll have a good time. On my PC it’s gotta be Left 4 Dead. Zombies for the win! On DS it’s a tie between Professor Layton and The World Ends With You. Both are masterpieces. On the Wii, I haven’t gotten a chance to play Madworld yet, so I’ll have to do with No More Heroes. The winner for PS2 would have to be Persona 4. Such an awesome game. Dreamcast would be Sonic Adventure 2. It’s just a bit better than the first one.

-What gaming systems do you own and which is your favorite?

I own a DS, 360, PC, PS2 Wii, and a Dreamcast. My favorite would have to be my 360. It has all my most beloved games on it!

-The E3 Expo is only a matter of weeks away and everyone is excited to hear all of the new announcements that will be made. What would you like to see announced at this year’s E3?

Hmm, well some new additions to current franchises would be great. I don’t have a PS3, but more information about Kingdom Hearts III (maybe a 360 announcement about the game? *nock on wood*) would be awesome. Perhaps an announcement of a Portal 2? That would be just fine with me. I’m also looking forward to new info about Bioshock 2. Most anticipated game this year!

gamerDNA Member Newsletter #3

Hello gamerDNA nation! We’re back with another member newsletter and we’ve got new shiny stuff to show off! Winter is turning into Spring here in Boston..the sky is sunny again, we’re not getting a foot of snow in a day anymore, and spirits are high in the gamerDNA offices.

Over the past few months we’ve been working really hard to put out some great features for the gamerDNA community and it has really been awesome to see how everyone has been using these new features. You should expect more features in the near future, we’re not stopping!

One of the games that we’ve been having a lot of fun with this month is the Xbox 360 Arcade title Death Tank . This game is a very fun vehicle shooter which resembles the early 90s PC classics Scorched Earth, Worms, and Gunbound. We gathered the development team around our conference room projector screen and hooked up our Xbox 360 to get in some lunch time (and sometimes Dinner) gaming. We’ve had a lot of fun and a lot of exciting matches over the last few weeks. Here is an action shot of the gamerDNA staff playing Death Tank during one of our late night gamerDNA patch nights:

Starting with this newsletter and going forward, we’re going to be adding some different things to the newsletter to highlight some of the top conversations on the site. gamerDNA Feature Spotlight

The gamerDNA development team has been focused on revamping the Game Pages over the past month, and we’re happy to show you the results of that work!

The new gamerDNA game pages allow you to easily see how a game matches to your individual gamerDNA, your friends that have played it, and what that particular game’s traits have in common with traits that you have entered before into the gamerDNA Discovery Engine.

You can even Buy, Rent, or in some cases Play the game right here from gamerDNA! We’ve made some partnerships with various online retailers and game companies so that we can provide as much game content as possible to our community. We will be adding more as time goes by, but we’ve got quite a few in already!

These new game pages also introduce the gameCurrent feature, a roll up of all the recent activity around a game. This includes automated and manual game activity entries, game posts, pictures, and reviews. You can also filter all this content in a number of different ways!

Lastly, we’ve created gadgets on the right hand side of each game page which can give you some overall insight into the gamerDNA community. This includes the ability to see similar games (based on our Discovery Engine), Top Players of that game, and some of the top content contributions for that game.

-Where in the real world do you live?
Victoria, Australia

-How long have you been gaming?
I’m not really sure, since I was 7 I think

-What got you into gaming and what sort of games do you like the most?
Originally for Christmas I was given a Gameboy with Pokemon Yellow that started me off on games, the games I like the most are games with a rich story and characters and failing that, MMOs

-What brought you to gamerDNA and what do you think is the best feature of the site?
I was cruising the Stargate Worlds forum and I saw someone with a Bartle Quiz signature, I clicked on the site and bam I found this great site. The best part is the forums of course ^ ^

-Who from the gamerDNA community would you like to meet in person?
Ah so many people Mykalgaidin, Dvader83, Jezmyn, KaimerasPain, Melzombie (who I can’t get to use the forums), typochondriac and Retodon8

-What is your favorite game?
Gah! hate this question. Most likely Septerra Core but I love so many games its hard to like one at a time.

-What gaming systems do you own and which is your favorite?
I own a PC, Gameboy / advance, Xbox and a Xbox 360, I love my xbox 360 and it only wins over my pc by a hairs breadth

-If you could have any movie or comic book made in to a video game, what would it be?
None, but if it was a TV show Angel or Stargate (which is happening yay!)

gamerDNA Member Newsletter Issue #2

Welcome to gamerDNA’s 2nd Member Newsletter! We’re glad to be back this month and we’re ready to show you what we’ve been working on lately, something we’re quite excited about. The past month has been very busy for the development team – They’ve been hard at work on a brand new revamp of our game experience/autoblogging system which just launched this week. Please read on to find out more about this new feature.

As the team has been working hard and pulling some late nights, we’ve turned to some classic tunes to push us even further. As of late, our favorite song that always motivates the team is "The Final Countdown " by Swedish rock sensation Europe.

Here you can see ChangeAgent, Fatty Chubs and Stealthbaz rocking out to some Final Countdown.

In the coming weeks and months we’ve got a lot of new additions and revamps planned to make gamerDNA a better place for you to share your gaming with others, keep up with your friends, discover new games and even ways you can purchase/play those games. This is all coming up very soon; we’re excited to see where gamerDNA and the community are heading!
