gamerDNA Spotlight - Recruitment Reels

Posted by Imran Malek on Thursday Oct 9, 2008 Under Fun Stuff, Spotlights, gamerDNA Life

Everyone knows that the backbone of any good group, clan, or guild is the recruitment process. Without a steady flow of new applicants, your group may be missing out!

One of the most inventive ways to invite recruitment is to create a video! Like the great propoganda videos of yester-year today’s modern artists use moving pictures to motivate, inspire, and recruit.

Up first we have a video from gamerDNA clan Blackwater ArmA, a clan that plays the highly realistic military shooter, ArmA (Armed Assault):

Up next we have a recruitment video for gamerDNA clan 31st Strike Division, a clan devoted to the anticipated Tom Clancy-themed RTS - EndWar (since when did Tom Clancy become a theme?).

Sometimes, people want to use a show of their skills a simple, but effective recruitment strategy - just as the Call of Duty 4 clan, TCAA, has done with this video (it really is just 9 minutes of gameplay):

Last, but certainly not least, the truly dedicated group leaders will put their reputations (and faces) on the line by putting their own image for all the world to see (with a bonus pirate hat and eyepatch).

Want to see what I mean? Check out this video from the interestingly named Warhammer Online guild, The Bipolar Pirates (bonus points to them for having a rocking song on their guild home page).

Got something that you think should spotlighted? Let us know!

gamerDNA PAX Post Mortem

Posted by Sam Houston on Thursday Sep 11, 2008 Under Fun Stuff, News, gamerDNA Life

Now that it’s been a full week since we got back from PAX and we’re fully recovered, we thought it’s time to wrap up our experience at PAX and share some of the good times and good stories.  If you don’t remember, gamerDNA invaded Seattle for the 2008 PAX that took place on August 29th through August 31st.  Little did we know what gaming bliss awaited us.

Incase you don’t know what PAX is, Wikipedia has your back:

The Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) is an annual gamer festival held in Washington state, USA. PAX was created by Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, the authors of the Penny Arcade webcomic, because they wanted to attend a show that gave equal attention to console gamers, computer gamers, and tabletop gamers.

Every year PAX has grown in numbers by an order of magnitude and this year was no exception.  The gamerDNA crew had the pleasure of spending the weekend with over 58,000 other gamers that arguably took over downtown Seattle.  The Seattle Convention Center was filled to the brim with gamers of all types checking out the booth floor, attending the many great panels and concerts, and of course…playing games.  If you’re a gamer of any sort, PAX is the place to be if you pick any gaming convention to visit.

Friday afternoon kicked off with the official start of PAX and the initial rush to get your badge and swag bag for the event.  After picking up our gear and badges and taking a stroll around the show floor, we decided to hit up lunch at the Microsoft Xbox "Meet ‘n’ Eat" at Red Mill Burgers.  There we had the pleasure of meeting all the folks behind the Xbox Live community team, including Trixie360 and Major Nelson.  Not only that, but the food was fantastic.  If you ever need a burger in the Seattle, Red Mill is definitely the way to go.

They also had the best wall of bacon we’ve ever seen.  So much so, we had to take a picture of it:

The Best Wall of Bacon Ever

The highlight for all of us was the gamerDNA PAX Party which turned out to be a smashing success.  Gamers of all types showed up, ranging from industry folks, TV celebrities, journalists, podcasters and bloggers.  I think it’s safe to say everyone there had a good time playing Rock Band and hanging out, talking about games.  The party ended up rockin’ for several hours and by the end of it we were all very happy with how it went, but very tired.

Saturday and Sunday were our chances to finally spend more time on the show floor, demo some games, and check out some of the panels that we wanted to go to.  Jon also had the opportunity to interview with various press at the event (which by the way you can check out Jon’s interview with Massively here).

On Sunday we made a point of checking out the "Giant Bomb Reunion Panel" which was a great time and very entertaining.  Turns out Jeff Gerstmann is a big fan of 360Voice so it was neat to get a chance to talk to all the guys behind Giant Bomb about PAX, games, and what they are doing at their company.  If you haven’t already, make sure you check out Giant Bomb for a great wiki all about games.

After Sunday it was time to make our way back home and catch the 6 hour flight to Boston.  All in all PAX was an awesome time for all of us and we can’t wait to go back again next year in 2009.  We would like to thank everyone who came out to our first gamerDNA PAX Party, it was great to meet you all and spend a weekend of gaming nirvana with you all.  Next time around, expect a much bigger presence at PAX from the team at gamerDNA.  We’ll be seeing you at the 2010 PAX in our home town of Boston too :)

Do you TF2?

Here at gamerDNA we love Team Fortress 2 just about as much as everyone else does: A lot - Which is why everyone here in the office was pumped to find out that we now have our own Team Fortress 2 Server! Just connect to 8.9.6.209:27015 and you’ll be in the fray with all your gamerDNA buddies! While you’re at it, why not add Team Fortress 2 to your games collection? Then, when you stab me in the back you can write about it so that all the world can see how you embarrassed me in front of my coworkers!

Want to get an idea of what your fellow gamerDNA TF2 fans will play like? Make sure they’ve taken the FPS Playstyle Quiz  so you can now how they’ll react when the going gets tough. And hey! While you’re at it, join the gamerDNA Steam community

E3 @ DNA

Posted by Sanya Weathers on Monday Jul 7, 2008 Under Fun Stuff

We have listed E32008 as a game. It IS a game, with levels like “How To Get Crappy Coffee From a Line 200 Deep Without Swearing.” Handy tip from a vet - the women’s restroom is deserted. Put on some lipstick and a skirt and march right in.

Uh… sorry, I get off topic. Anyway. We’ve listed E3 as a game, because that will help YOU to automatically feed content to the page! Check it out here: http://www.gamerdna.com/games/e3-2008

Any time you see anything related to E3, or better yet, you are on the spot yourself, share the good stuff with those of us trapped at home, stuck to our refresh buttons?

Talking about our members!

Posted by Trapper Markelz on Monday Jun 30, 2008 Under Fun Stuff

The truth is… we love this place… and we enjoy looking at all if the great stories, games, characters, images, etc that people are adding every day. Every so often, those of us in start-up land have to give presentations for people… and to showcase the vibe of this place, I like to include profiles about some of our members… their stories… their GamerDNA! Here are a few people I recently featured in a presentation.

Mirrorshade
A huge fan of Sword of the New World and pirates!

Nerthing
Loves Guild Wars and Diablo and has beta tested many titles.

plutonick
Probably the most hard-core WoW player on the site… who is a recent AoC convert.

Isaacquotien
…knows how to spin a yarn about WoW adventures…

Arrek
Can tell a tale about Star Wars Galaxies that makes you feel like you were there!

From time to time, we hope to feature more of our members on a regular basis. In the meantime, if you think you have something to say or something to show, head over to the GamerDNA Life forum… it is meant for you to show people the awesome stuff you are adding to your profile!

This Weekend - Nor’Easter 2008!

Posted by Sanya Weathers on Friday Jun 27, 2008 Under Fun Stuff

Who doesn’t love a LAN party!? http://noreaster.lpane.net/

Not only does this look like the most fun you can have outside a vat of maple syrup, but the people at GamerDNA are going to record it for posterity. DNA Minions Sam and Imran are taking off their company slave hats (there are bells on the ends) and putting on their reporter fedoras. They’re going to be wandering around with video cameras, and asking “What’s in your GamerDNA?”

Please do go to the party. Besides, the proceeds go to Shriner hospitals for kids. If you’re part of a generation of gamers, it’s good for your karma to help out the next generation of gamers, you know? Also, there will be swag. Go forth and rock, and hey, let me know how it went!

Say “Frostmourne”!

Posted by Sanya Weathers on Thursday Jun 12, 2008 Under Fun Stuff

You may have missed the press release. We’ve ordered a Frostmourne sword, and we’re going to give it to someone who uses the GamerDNA panel to upload an image of their character.

Log in. Open your panel. Upload an image (screenshot, stick figure drawing, a photo of yourself in costume) of your World of Warcraft character. Go to http://www.gamerdna.com/saycheese. Choose that image from the dropdown list in the upper right hand corner.

That’s it.

If you went to more trouble to create your portrait than a stick figure or a screenshot, you’ll automatically be entered into a drawing for WOW game cards when you enter the Frostmourne contest.

Tell your friends :)

Have You Checked a Games Page Lately?

Posted by Sanya Weathers on Tuesday Jun 10, 2008 Under Fun Stuff

The relaunch has made some of our features better than ever. One of those features is the game page. Take the 300 pound gorilla, World of Warcraft. Rather, take the GamerDNA take on WoW: http://www.gamerdna.com/game/World-of-Warcraft

The world doesn’t need another WoW news site, and so we didn’t make one. Instead, this page weaves together all the strands from our members who play the game - the experiences, the screenshots, the profiles, and a quick list of the news stories our members have voted up as being important to them. Personally, I enjoy the Stories the most.

I have a friend, we were coworkers for years, and she had me over to her house one weekend. I was telling a story from a old online game - the gist was that my guildmates had played one hell of a practical joke on what amounted to the entire freaking server. She stared at me, and called her husband in. She told me to repeat the tale. Yep, you guessed it - they had been there. Small world.

It’s a silly story, maybe, but it’s one more tie binding us together, one more common thread. How many more stories like this will I find, especially if I put that story into my profile, and it feeds into the page for that old game?

Never Tease a Gamer

Posted by Sanya Weathers on Tuesday May 20, 2008 Under Fun Stuff

I wrote a survey for GamerDNA members to tell us why you didn’t fill out a profile, as part of our ongoing quest to make this site’s technology as fun, effortless, and personal as humanly possible. (Humanly AND technologically possible is the way we roll, baby. The man in the machine is a philosophical conundrum that… oh, who am I kidding, the fact is I had a total crush on Brent Spiner while ST:TNG was running, and I’ve been mildly obsessed with human/technology intersections ever since.)

Ahem. Sorry, I digress a lot. So, anyway, at the end of the survey I put in a text field that said, paraphrased, “Tell us why you didn’t give us your DNA. If you did give us your DNA, you can skip this or use this space to compose a haiku.”

Um. I was kidding, when I said that, but I should know by now to never tease a gamer. We got dozens of haiku.

I won’t post them all today, but look for them here over the next few days.

Here’s one:

Profiles are like life
Changing as the games progress
Fill it out again.
